 what is network in computer

What is a Network?

A network consists of two or more computers that share our resources with each other like: printers and CDs), exchange files, or allow electronic communications. The computers on a network may be connected with each other through cables, telephone lines, radio waves, satellites, or infrared light beams.

Two very common types of networks include:

  • Local Area Network (LAN)
  • Wide Area Network (WAN)

You may also see references to a Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN), a Wireless LAN (WLAN), or a wireless WAN (WWAN).

Local Area Network:

  • Local Area Network is a group of computers, that are connected to each other in a small area such as a building, office.
  • two or more computers are connected with each other by a communication medium like cable (UDP, STP, Coaxial) and wifi access point.
  • local area network is a separated network in a building, it provides faster speed and higher security.
Local Area Network

Wide Area Network:

Wide Area Networks (WANs) connect networks in larger geographic areas, like Delhi, India Office connected to USA office. Dedicated transoceanic cabling or satellite uplinks is also accustomed connect this sort of world network.
Using a WAN, the regional office can communicate with places like Delhi India of a matter.  Two users a half-world apart with workstations equipped with microphones and webcams might teleconference in real-time. A WAN is complicated. It uses multiplexers, bridges, and routers to attach local and metropolitan networks to global communications networks just like the Internet. To users, however, a WAN won’t appear to be much different than a LAN.

Wide Area Network

  • A Wide Area Network isn’t limited to one location, but it spans over an outsized geographic region through a telephone line, fiber optic cable, or satellite links.
  • The internet is one amongst the largest WAN within the world
  • A Wide Area Network is widely employed in the sector of Business, government, and education.

Wide Area Network

Examples Of Wide Area Network:

  • Mobile Broadband: A 4G network is widely used across a section or country.
  • Last-mile: A telecom company is employed to supply internet services to customers in many cities by connecting their homes with fiber.
  • Private network: A bank provides a non-public network that connects the offices. This network is formed by using the phone leased line provided by the telecom company.

Advantages Of Wide Area Network:

Following are the benefits of the Wide Area Network:

  • Geographical area: a large Area Network provides an oversized geographic region. Suppose if the branch of our office is in a very different city then we are able to connect with them through WAN. the net provides a leased line through which we are able to connect with another branch.
  • Centralized data: within the case of a WAN network, data is centralized. Therefore, we don’t have to buy the emails, files, or backup servers.
  • Get updated files: Software companies work on the live server. Therefore, the programmers get the updated files within seconds.
  • Exchange messages: during a WAN network, messages are transmitted fast. the online application like Facebook, Whatsapp, Skype allows you to speak with friends.
  • Sharing of software and resources: within the WAN network, we are able to share the software and other resources sort of a Winchester drive, RAM.
  • Global business: we will do business over the web globally.
  • High bandwidth: If we use the leased lines for our company then this provides the high bandwidth. The high bandwidth increases the information transfer rate which successively increases the productivity of our company.

Disadvantages of Wide Area Network:

The following are the disadvantages of the Wide Area Network:

  • Security issue: A WAN network has more security issues as compared to LAN and MAN network as all the technologies are combined together that makes the protection problem.
  • Needs Firewall & antivirus software: the info is transferred on the net which may be changed or hacked by hackers, that the firewall has to be used. Some people can inject the virus into our system so antivirus is required to guard from such a scourge.
  • High Setup cost: An installation cost of the WAN network is high because it involves the purchasing of routers, switches.
  • Troubleshooting problems: It covers an oversized area so fixing the matter is difficult.
